It is known in as ''longtou jianzhu'' , meaning ''dragon head Fargesia''. The scientific name is derived from Ancient Greek and has the same meaning. It is found at high elevations in the south of Gansu, western Hubei, southern Shaanxi and northern Sichuan. The plant is a significant source of food for the giant panda.

There is a bamboo cultivated in the west sold under the same name, but it is actually a recently described species, namely ''Fargesia apicirubens''. Confusingly, the most common cultivar of ''F. dracocephala'' is sometimes sold in the west under the name ''Fargesia rufa'', which is a different species.

It is a woody evergreen vine, growing to 20 m tall, climbing by means of small rootlets on the stems, similar to ivy . Like ivy, it also has a sterile non-flowering climbing or creeping phase, which on reaching high enough into the crowns of trees to get more light, develops into an adult, flowering phase which does not have climbing rootlets.

The are arranged in opposite pairs, elliptic to elliptic-ovate, 2-6 cm long and 1-3 cm broad, with a finely serrated margin. The flowers are inconspicuous, 5 mm diameter, with four small greenish-yellow petals. The fruit is a four-lobed pale green pod-like berry, which splits open to reveal the fleshy-coated orange seeds, one seed in each lobe.

There are two or three :
*''Euonymus fortunei'' var. ''fortunei'' . China, Korea.
*''Euonymus fortunei'' var. ''radicans'' Rehd. . Japan.
*''Euonymus fortunei'' var. ''vegetus'' Rehd. Northern Japan , doubtfully distinct from var. ''radicans'' .

It is named after the plant explorer Robert Fortune. The species is closely related to ''Euonymus japonicus'', which differs mainly in being only a shrub, without climbing roots.

Cultivation and uses

It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, with numerous cultivars selected for such traits as yellow, and slow, growth. It is used as a groundcover or a vine to climb walls and trees.

Plants propagated from mature flowering stems always grow as non-climbing shrubs. Some popular cultivars such as 'Moon Shadow' are shrub forms.

Most of the cultivated plants belong to var. ''radicans'' . It is generally considered cold hardy in 5 to 9, and is considered an invasive species in some parts of the world, notably the eastern United States.
The shrub grows to 2.5 m tall , often wider than tall. The stems are notable for their four corky ridges or "wings". These unique structures develop from a cork cambium deposited in longitudinal grooves in the twigs' first year, unlike similar wings in other plants. The are 2-7 cm long and 1-4 cm broad, ovate-elliptic, with an acute apex. The flowers are greenish, borne over a long period in the spring. The fruit is a red aril enclosed by a four-lobed pink, yellow or orange capsule.

The common name "burning bush" comes from the bright red fall color.

It is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and parks due to its bright pink or orange fruit and attractive fall color. This plant is an invasive species of woodlands in eastern North America.

Euonymus acanthocarpa

''Euonymus acanthocarpa'' is a species of plant in the Celastraceae family.
They are deciduous flowering shrubs or small trees, reaching 10-15 m tall.
The leaf arrangement is opposite and pinnate. The inflorescences are paniculate, terminal or axillary. The flowers have five sepals and petals; staminate flowers have eight stamens, and bisexual flowers have a two-celled ovary. The fruit is a rounded containing two compressed nutlets, flat, encircled by a broad wing which turns from light green to red with ripening.

There are only two living species, ''Dipteronia sinensis'' and ''Dipteronia dyeriana''; both are endemic to mainland China. ''Dipteronia dyeriana'' is listed by the as being a "Red List" threatened species. ''Dipteronia browni'' is an extinct species from the early Eocene Klondike Mountain Formation of Washington.

The name ''Dipteronia'' stems from the Greek "di-" & "pteron" , from the winged fruits with wings on both sides of the seed.

Datura metel

''Datura metel'', known as Angel's Trumpet, Devil's trumpet, metel, downy thorn-apple and, along with ''Datura stramonium'', zombie cucumber is a shrub-like perennial herb with large tubular flowers, while typically white, many cultivated forms exist offering yellows and deep purple accents. Native to China, India and South East Asia, it is commonly cultivated as a garden plant in North America and Europe.

Medicinal use

''D. metel'' is one of the used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is called ''yáng jīn huā'' .
The leaves or juice of it if consumed make the person dumb .
The dry flower, particularly the violet coloured, if rolled and used like cigar, will help to relieve the asthma or wheezing like symptoms.

Toxicity

This plant may be toxic if ingested in any quantity, symptomatically expressed as flushed skin, headaches, hallucinations, and possibly convulsions or even a coma. The principal toxic elements are tropane alkaloids. Accidentally ingesting even a single leaf could lead to severe side effects.

Black daturas

A cultivar of ''Datura metel'' with a polished-looking ebony-black stem exists as a garden plant. Its flowers normally have a double or tripple corolla, each corolla having a deep purple exterior and white or off-white interior. The fruit lacks the infamous thorns. It is quite a large datura and could be mistaken for a young tree. Leaves lack the downy appearance of the type species and are more angular, in some ways reminiscent of D. stramonium. The plant is already reported to have become in Israel . The black cultivar might become a common roadside dweller, like its white-flowered ancestor.

Dalbergia tonkinensis

''Dalbergia tonkinensis'' is a species of legume in the Fabaceae family.

It is a deciduous tree growing up to 20-25 m tall, with a trunk up to 1 m diameter. Its foliage is remarkable for its size, among the largest of all oaks, consisting of a short hairy , 1–1.5 cm long, and a blade 10–40 cm long and 15–30 cm broad, with a shallowly lobed margin; the form is reminiscent of an enormous Pedunculate Oak leaf. The leaves are often retained dead on the tree into winter. Both sides of the leaf are initially downy with the upper surface becoming smooth.

The flowers are produced in May; the male flowers are pendulous catkins. The female flowers are sessile, growing near the tips of new shoots, producing acorns 1.2–2.3 cm long and 1.2–1.5 cm broad, in broad, bushy-scaled cups; the acorns mature in September to October.

Cultivation and uses

It was introduced to the British Isles in 1830, where it is occasionally grown in botanical gardens. It is usually smaller in cultivation than in the wild, growing to a small angular tree or large irregular shrub. Notable specimens include one at Osterley Park 14 m tall and 1.5 m girth, and the largest, 18 m tall, at Avondale Forest Park, County Wicklow, Ireland.

It forms enormous forests in the eastern Siberian taiga, growing at 50-1,200 m altitude on both boggy and well-drained soils, including on the shallow soils above permafrost. It is unique in two respects, being the tree in the world, reaching 72° 30' N at Ary-Mas in the Khatanga River valley on the Taymyr Peninsula, and also the most cold-hardy tree in the world, tolerating temperatures below in the Oymyakon–Verkhoyansk region of Yakutia. One tree in Yakutia is known to have been 919 years old.

It is a medium-sized deciduous tree reaching 10-30 m tall, rarely 40 m, with a trunk up to 1 m diameter. The crown is broad conic; both the main branches and the side branches are level, the side branches only rarely drooping. The shoots are dimorphic, with growth divided into long shoots and bearing several buds, and short shoots only 1-2 mm long with only a single bud. The are needle-like, light green, 2-3 cm long; they turn bright yellow to orange before they fall in the autumn, leaving the variably downy reddish-brown shoots bare until the next spring.

The are erect, ovoid, 1-2 cm long, with 15-25 moderately reflexed seed scales; they are green when immature, turning brown and opening to release the seeds when mature, 3-5 months after pollination. The old cones commonly remain on the tree for many years, turning dull grey-black.

There are three :
*''Larix gmelinii'' var. ''gmelinii''. Most of the species' range, from the Yenisei Valley east to Kamchatka.
*''Larix gmelinii'' var. ''japonica''. The Kuril Islands and Sakhalin .
*''Larix gmelinii'' var. ''olgensis''. North Korea, Heilongjiang, and the Sikhote-Alin mountains of Primorsky Krai, Russia.

The closely related Prince Rupprecht's Larch is treated as a fourth variety by many botanists; it occurs in a disjunct region in the Wutai Shan mountains west of Beijing, separated from typical ''L. gmelinii'' by about 1000 km, and differs in larger cones with more scales.

Dahurian Larch intergrades with the closely related Siberian Larch ''L. sibirica'' of central and western Siberia where their ranges meet along the Yenisei Valley; the resulting is named ''Larix × czekanowskii''.

The scientific name honours Johann Georg Gmelin. Due to the species' variability, it has acquired numerous in the botanical literature, including ''L. cajanderi, L. dahurica, L. kamtschatica, L. komarovii, L. kurilensis, L. lubarskii, L. ochotensis''.

Dahurian Larch is occasionally grown in botanical gardens in Europe and North America; it is not an easy tree to grow in areas with mild winters as it is adapted to a long period of winter rest; the warm winter weather in Britain can tempt it into leaf as early as the start of January, with the tender young leaves then being killed by the next frost. In its native region, temperatures above freezing do not occur until late May or June, with no further frost until the brief summer is over.

Cycas taiwaniana

''Cycas taiwaniana'' is a species of genus ''Cycas''.
The stems are largely subterranean, 20-60 cm in diameter and up to 20 cm above ground level, and bear three to eight . The leaves are 2-4 m long and 40-80 cm broad, dark green and glossy, bipinnate, with 27-44 pairs of leaflets, each leaflet dichotomously divided , linear, 10-38 cm long and 1.5-3 cm broad, papery to leathery in texture; the leaf petiole is 0.5-2 m long, armed with spikes.

The female are closed, the sporophylls 8-12 cm long, with deep red-brown tomentose down, and 6-8 ovules on an ovate lamina, with yellow to yellow-brown sarcotesta. Ovoid and flattened sclerotesta. The male cones are solitary and erect, spindle shaped and cylindrical 15-23 long and 4-6 cm broad, with light yellow tomentose down and an erect apical spine with 1.2-2 cm sporophylls with 1-3 minute teeth per side.

The species is named after its dichotomously divided leaflets, a character shared with a few other related species. It has been extensively confused in literature with the related species ''Cycas multifrondis'' and ''Cycas micholitzii'' ; in the ''Flora of China'', it is treated as ''Cycas micholitzii'', a species restricted by Hill to plants from central Vietnam and Laos.

Habitat

It is native to areas of dense bamboo woodlands or mixed deciduous forest near limestone outcroppings. Some of its native locations are on the site of various clashes over the border of Vietnam and China, and still contains numerous land mine fields, protecting the species from poaching. The Longgang Nature Reserve was established for the protection of this cycad, of which the Chinese populations are considered endangered. It is rarely found in cultivation.

Cycas balansae

''Cycas balansae'' is a species of cycad in the genus ''Cycas'', native to southwestern China and adjacent northern Vietnam , where it occurs in dense mountain rainforests.
These fruits are very attractive to birds, which are the main agent of seed dispersal.

Corylus yunnanensis

''Corylus yunnanensis'' is a species of hazelnut found in western China. It is native throughout much of East Asia and northern parts of Southeast Asia. In China, the plant is known as ''yazhicao'' ,

The species has been introduced to much of Europe and eastern North America. On the former continent it is now found from Central Europe well into western Russia. Specifically it is known from Italy north to Switzerland, east through the region encompassing the former Yugoslavia, east into the regions around the Black Sea including Romania, the , and the Ukraine but excluding Crimea, north through the into Belarus and Russia, continuing east into the regions surrounding the Don River and the Volga River south to their intersection at the Volga-Don Canal and north to the regions around Lake Ladoga and Lake Ilmen, and farther east to the regions of the Ural River and the Kama River. It is also found in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is present in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in Canada, and in most of the eastern and central states from Massachusetts and New York in the northeast, west to Minnesota and south through the Great Plains to Texas and east to extreme northern Florida in the United States.

Within its native distribution, the plant is most typical of moist, open places, including shady forest edges and wet areas of crop fields, orchards, ditches, and roadsides. In Taiwan, it can be found from 350 to 2400 m elevation. Within its native range in China it is also sometimes considered a pest, especially in the northeast of the country where it has caused economically significant agricultural damage in orchards.

The Asiatic dayflower has been used in pollination studies concerning the behaviour of plants in relation to their pollinators. One important experiment tested the hypotheses that floral guides simultaneously promote pollinator visitation and prevent visits where the pollinator fails to come into contact with the stigma or anthers, termed pollen theft. As the flowers of the Asiatic dayflower lack nectar, they offer only pollen as a reward to their visitors. To attract pollinators, the plant has three types of brightly colored floral organs: the large blue petals, fertile yellow anthers, and infertile yellow antherodes that lack pollen. When the infertile antherodes were experimentally removed in natural populations, the number of total floral visitor landings was reduced, supporting the hypothesis that these infertile anthers essentially trick their pollinators into believing they offer more than they actually do. When the central, bright yellow fertile anther was removed, leaving only two brown fertile anthers, the frequency of legitimate flower landings decreased, meaning that the visitors were not pollinating the flowers, suggesting that floral signals also prevent "theft", or visits where the pollinators take pollen, but do not place any on the stigma. Thus both the fertile anthers and the infertile antherodes were shown to play an important role in both increasing visitor landings and orienting floral visitors toward a landing point appropriate for pollination.

Recent studies have shown that wild Asiatic dayflower populations found growing on copper mine spoils in eastern China exhibited very high concentrations of copper within the plants, more so than the 48 species tested. ''Commelina communis'' had sequestered some 361 mg/kg-1 of copper, while the plant with the next highest concentration, ''Polygonum macrathum'', had 286 mg/kg-1. Five of the species examined, including the Asiatic dayflower, also showed high concentrations of other metals such as zinc, lead, and cadmium. The results suggest that the Asiatic dayflower is a good candidate for copper mine spoil revegetation and phytoremediation.

Ten species of fungi have been found on the Asiatic dayflower, four of which can infect the plant, while 12 species of insects are known to be associated with it. Two of the fungi, ''Kordyana commelinae'' and ''Phyllosticta commelinicola'', are thought to be host specific with the Asiatic dayflower. Of the ten fungi seven are Basidiomycota and three are Ascomycota. Nine of the 12 insects associated with the plant are beetles, seven of which are in the genus ''Lema'', while the other two are in the families Hispidae and Pentatomidae. The remaining three insects include one species of moth, ''Pergesa acteus'', and two true bugs, namely ''Aphis commilinae'' and ''Aeschrocoris ceylonicus''.

Pigment and dye

In Japan there is a sizeable dye industry devoted to the plant. The purported variety ''Commelina communis'' var. ''hortensis'', which is apparently a cultivated form of another putative variety, namely ''Commelina communis'' var. ''ludens'', is grown for its larger petals which yield a blue juice used in manufacturing a paper called ''boshigami'' or nihongo|''aigami''|, The paper is usually resoaked, allowing the pigment to be reabsorbed in water for use as a dye. is composed primarily of malonyl awobanin and was used extensively as a colorant in 18th and 19th century woodblock prints in Japan, especially during the early Ukiyo-e era. The colorant is known to have been used by several famous Ukiyo-e artists such as Torii Kiyonaga. However, ''aigami'' fades to a greenish yellow in a matter of months when exposed to sunlight. As a result, the color was eventually replaced by imported Prussian blue , a much more stable colour with its first commercial appearance in 1829 in the work of Keisai Eisen. Additional uses include making preparatory designs on cloth before dyeing with other pigments. For example, the blue pigmentation of Asiatic dayflower petals was shown to consist of a large complex of six anthocyanins, six flavones, and two associated magenesium ions, demonstrating that supramolecular complexes of several copigments and metals often determine colour. Other research on the plant has helped to explain in plants such as their stomatal responses to blue light versus red light spectrums, abscisic acid perception and its role in cell signaling, particularly concerning the chemical's role in stomatal function, the role of vanadates in inhibiting stomatal opening, and the necessity of calcium in stomatal closure, among other topics. Its widespread use in stomatal studies is due to the fact that the leaves produce exceptional epidermal peels that are consistently one cell layer thick. This same quality makes the plant popular for use in laboratory exercises in higher education for demonstrating stomatal function and morphology. Guard cell turgor pressure and its regulation in the opening and closing of stomata is particularly easy to demonstrate with the Asiatic dayflower.

Chuniophoenix hainanensis

''Chuniophoenix hainanensis'' is a species of flowering plant in the Arecaceae family.
